The Alabama Public Health Department takes the major initiative to protect and improve the general health of the community. Alabama Medicaid Agency

The Medical Aid is provided by the Alabama Medicaid Agency. The agency provides multiple services and programs approved by state/federal law to ensure that the residents receive quality treatments. Based on the eligibility criteria, the program pays for medical services to health policy holders, senior citizens, children, low income pregnant women, disables and nursing home residents. The agency has covered varied and extensive services, namely, long term services, all medical services, pharmacy services, qualitative improvement initiatives, Health information technology services, transportation services and other cancer treatment programs.

Long term care services are provided to the eligible patients and based on their requirements, they can choose from many facilities at home or nursing homes. The facilities include home care, hospital care, nursing home care, private nursing and sturdy medical equipments.

Medical services encompass dental, family planning, maternity, mental health, preventive services, ancillary services (eye care, hearing care, laboratory and radiology services) and all hospital services. Under the state/federal law, the Alabama Medicaid agency covers for medicines prescribed by licensed doctors and pharmacists.

Qualitative improvement initiatives focus on improving the health facilities received by the patients so that the recipients avail superior health care.

The health Information Technology generates crucial information of health care system to promote progressive health awareness and to improve the output of the programs.

The Medicaid also covers ambulance and non emergency transportation facilities for the eligible patients. The aid pays the eligible patients for ambulance during emergency and also non emergency transportation to all medical centers.

The Alabama Medicaid provides free cancer screenings and diagnostic services (pelvic exam, pap-smear, mammogram, ultrasound, colonoscopy or biopsy) to inculcate cancer prevention awareness to the community.

Health Statistics and Index of Alabama

Under the purview of the Center for Health statistics, all health related statistics for the state of Alabama are collected and recorded by the automated vital record system (VISION). The center for health statistics maintains and releases all the certified copies of birth certificates, death certificates, marriage certificates and divorce certificates through 67 county health departments [3].

  • Under the state/federal law, Birth certificates are confidential records maintained by the center for health statistics with the restricted access for 125 years [4] from the date of birth. The Center furnishes the certificates to the person named on the certificate, mother, father, son, daughter, sister, brother or legal representative of the person. Certain legal fees are levied to obtain the certificate or additional copies, to search the certificate and also to expedite the process.

    Additionally, adopted individuals, 19 years [4] of age or older born in Alabama or adopting parents may obtain informational copies of the original birth certificates from the center upon payment of the requisite fees and by following the mandatory instructions. The birth parents are also allowed to add more information of the adoptee in the confidential sealed file. For foreign adoptee, the adopting parents may now obtain the Certificate of Foreign Birth from the center.

  • Under the state/federal law Death certificates are confidential records maintained by the center for health statistics with the restricted access for 25years [5] from the date of death. The centre furnishes the certificate to the mother, father, husband, wife, son, daughter, sister, brother, grandchild, informant listed or legal representative of the person if the death certificate is less than 25 years old or else anyone may obtain it upon payment of the proper fees.

  • Marriage Certificates are unrestricted and under the state/federal law, anyone may obtain it by paying the requisite legal fees and providing vital information.

  • Divorce Certificates are unrestricted and under the state/federal law, anyone may obtain it by paying the requisite legal fees and providing vital information.
